Links to websites with important cultural information for Cuba
Website: http://autenticacuba.com/culture
Description: I found this website to be very helpful because it was created by the Cuban Ministry of Tourism in order to give researchers and future tourists an idea of what the island nation of Cuba is all about. Within the website is an entire section devoted to Cuban culture. Within the Culture section are multiple sub-sections of culture including; architecture, ballet, music, cinema, literature, sport, and visual arts. This site and its information paints a quality picture of what an outsider might be interested and knowing and discovering during their visit to Cuba.
Website: http://www.britannica.com/place/Cuba
Description: This website is hosted by the longtime popular Encyclopedia Britannica series and has a wide array of information regarding Cuba including items addressing Cuban culture. Much like the previous website this source has an entire section devoted specifically to the cultural life of Cubans with sub-sections including; Daily life and customs, Arts and Literature, Sports and Recreation, and Media and Publishing. I would suggest this site because it offers more of an objective view of Cuban culture because it was not created by a branch of the Cuban government in order to encourage tourism.

This map highlights the origins and destinations of the Slave Trade from West Africa to the Americas. When the Spanish conquered the West Indies they ravaged the indigenous populations through warfare, forced slavery, and disease. The result was that the European conquerors needed to import slaves from other parts of the world in order to establish and maintain their new colonies. The overwhelming majority of these slaves came from areas of West Africa. Therefore today in Cuba close to 1/4 of Cubans are either of African or mixed African descent. This has had a large influence on the Cuban culture we see today, most importantly Art and Aesthetics.
